Tana Toraja – Loko’Mata

The culture in Tana Toraja is based on ancient rituals. They are mummifying the dead people and put their graves into the stones. Once a year they take out the dead to clean them and celebrate them.

The funerals can last up to two weeks. Depending on the status of the passed away person the size of the funeral and specially the offerings (pigs and water buffaloes) that are slaughtered during the wedding. It is a one in a lifetime experience to attend one of the funerals. Do not forget to bring a present. We were advised to bring either sugar or clove cigarettes. And watch out with the coconut wine ;).
